Then one day you discover... you've never actually called them by their real name. 😂
Welcome to Thailand.
One of the first things foreigners notice is that almost everyone has a nickname.
Not just children.
Adults too.
Teachers, doctors, business owners, grandparents... we all use nicknames every day.
When one of my students first met me, he asked,
"Wait... your name is Pailin, but everyone calls you Ploy?"
I laughed because that's completely normal here.
My official name is Pailin, but almost everyone calls me Ploy. My friends, family, and even many students rarely use my real name.
When I was in school, it was exactly the same. Honestly, I still have to think for a second when someone mentions a classmate's real name. 😂
Here are a few common Thai nicknames:
💎 Ploy (พลอย) = Gem
💵 Bank (แบงก์) = Banknote
🧊 Ice (ไอซ์) = Ice
☁️ Fah (ฟ้า) = Sky
💧 Nam (น้ำ) = Water
💥 Boom (บูม) = Full of energy
🌍 Earth (เอิร์ธ) = Earth
🍺 Beer (เบียร์) = Beer 😂
🎸 Guitar (กีตาร์) = Guitar
👑 Boss (บอส) = Boss
Yep... in Thailand, almost anything can become a nickname. 😂
I've met people named Cream, Film, โบนัส (Bonus), First, Benz, Porsche, and even Star.
If it sounds cute or cool, there's a good chance someone in Thailand is already using it as a nickname.
So why do we use nicknames?
They're short, friendly, and make conversations feel much more relaxed.
Calling someone by their full legal name every day would sound surprisingly formal to most Thai people.

Some Thai people have known each other for years without ever learning each other's official names.
Yes, really. 😂
So if someone introduces themselves by saying,
"Hi, I'm Beer."
Don't be surprised if their real name has absolutely nothing to do with beer.
And no... their parents probably weren't naming them after their favorite drink. 😆
It's one of the little things that makes Thailand so charming. 🇹🇭
